The Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health commonly known as ‘Annai Vailankanni Shrine’ is a Marian Shrine marking apparitions attributed to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Located at the Edward Elliot’s Beach on the sandy shores of Bay of Bengal, this shrine is dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health.
History of Annai Vailankanni Shrine
The original church building was built in 1972 which was expanded in the later years.
It is believed that Mother Mary carrying infant Jesus in her arms appeared in a dream of the late Rev. Fr. P. T. Arulappa, who initiated the construction of this church to honor Our Lady of Good Health. The impressive 97 feet belfry was inaugurated in the year 1972 by the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr. M. Karunanidhi.
Foundation of this shrine was inspired from the apparitions of Our Mother at Vailankanni that took place around the 16th and the 17th century.
