The imposing red building under a clear blue sky is a sight to behold! This majestic building has been a witness to many important milestones in Indian legal history. Yet the century old building remains a relatively less visited tourist destination in the city.
History and Architecture of Madras High Court
Under the guidance of J. W. Brassington, the then consulting architect to the British government and Henry Irwin, construction of this magnificent Indo-Saracenic architectural sensation was completed in 1892.
It is a peculiar amalgamation of Hindu, Mughal and Gothic style of architecture. The Madras High Court features minarets and domes with snake reliefs, stone brackets and elegant stained glass, floral designs as well as metal and stone fretwork. You can get an amazing view of the campus from the domes (if you can get the permission).
The artistic arches are another key feature though some of them are covered with khus khus thatties (blinds/shades).
Madras High Court is well known for gracefully surviving the two World Wars. During the First World War, it was one of the targets of bombing by Germans and during the Second War it was on the receiving end of a Japanese attack, though the building did not get harmed in the action.
