History of Puzhal Aeri
Chennai Puzhal Aeri water reservoir was built in the late 19th century during British rule. It was a small tank of 500 mcft (million cubic feet) in those days. The reservoir had two weirs (low dams) to release excess water from. But today, they have been replaced by two shutters.
In 1997, the storage capacity was increased to 3,300 mcft. It was done to store Krishna River water received from Andhra Pradesh, and to cater to the drinking water needs of Chennai.

Entry to Puzhal Aeri Chennai is free for all. And it is open throughout the day. So, you can visit it any time and spend as much time as you want. Also, have an hour extra in hand, as the lake is away from the city.
It is best to visit Puzhal Aeri/Red Hills Lake in the winter months. In winter, from November to February, the weather is pleasant, and it’s not as hot and sticky as in summer. Also, after the heavy downpour of monsoon, the water level of the lake is high and you'll have a better chance of seeing some fishing in the lake.

By train – Korattur railway station is the closest to Puzhal town, only 10 km away. You can hop on a train from Chennai and then hire a taxi to the lake.
By bus – From Chennai, you can take a bus to Puzhal MTC Bus Stop. Then, you can hire a taxi to the lake.
By taxi/cab – Going by a taxi is the most comfortable way to visit Puzhal Aeri. Taxis are available all over Chennai and they take only an hour to the lake from most parts of the city.
