History of Ripon Building Chennai

The Ripon Building was built by Loganatha Mudaliar. It was named after Lord Ripon, a Governor-General of British India. And the Earl of Minto laid its foundation in 1909. He was the then Viceroy and Governor General of India.

The building took four years to build. And upon its completion in 1913, the Madras Municipal Corporation was settled here. P. L. Moore was its president at that time.

Architecture of Ripon Building

Ripon Building in Chennai is a fine example of the Neoclassical style of architecture. This majestic, three-storey, all-white structure is a combination of Gothic, Ionic and Corinthian architectural styles. It features exquisite detailing and decor, pulling in several visitors daily.

It is one of the few structures which hasn’t lost its charm over the years. The walls were constructed with bricks, which were set and plastered with lime mortar. Teak wood supports its roof. And the ground floor of this structure was done with Cuddapah Slate. But it has been replaced with marble.

The building has undergone many major renovations over the years and has been maintained well to preserve its beauty.
