History of Tholkappia Poonga Chennai
Eco Park Chennai Adyar is an urban coastal wetland ecological restoration project initiated by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the 2000s. It was conceptualised in 2004 by M. P. Vijayakumar, then commissioner of Chennai Corporation. And the foundation stone for the project was laid by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi (often referred to as Kalaignar) in 2007.
Tholkappia Poonga by Kalaignar is on land destroyed by sewage disposal and waste dumping. It was transformed into the present eco park through excavation, sewage diversion and strategic plantation. It was officially opened to the public in 2011. The name “Tholkappia Poonga” was kept as a remembrance of Tamil scholar Tholkappiar.
With guided tours, walking trails and interactive programmes, Adyar Poonga Eco Park is a centre for environmental education and research. The place is a phenomenal example of eco-restoration and biodiversity revival in Chennai.
