Dating its history back to the year 1855, the Arignar Anna Zoological Park is the first public zoo that was earlier formed in Madras City by Dr. Edward Belford. Later, in 1976, it was shifted to the current location of Vandalur Reserve Forest in Chennai. At that time, the park was spreading over an area of 512 ha. However, a few years later, when the work started in 1979, the authorities acquired more land to increase its size, and today, it has a total of 602 hectares of area.
Officially opened to the public in 1985, the Arignar Anna Zoological Park has everything it needs to meet the basic needs of the animals and birds. There is a separate place for every living creature and a special free zone for animals to roam around freely in peace.
